About the Stinger Jigs

Years ago the concept of the stinger hook became popular with anglers fishing during the late fall and early spring periods below many of the dams found along the Mississippi River between Minnesota and Wisconsin. At that time, the stinger was nothing more than a short length of line tied somewhere to a lead-head jig and a treble hook tied to the free end. The treble needed to be buried in the minnow being used as bait. The idea was that the treble hook would help hook those fish that hit short of the jig hook. In many regards the idea worked and is still used in many venues today just as it was at the idea's inception. There are a couple of issues though: one being that the stinger hook will fall out of the minnow if it hits something while being worked and then simply hangs loose ….the other being that hard jigging will pop the stinger loose and can cause it to wind around the primary line. Both will result in an ineffectual stinger. Until this rigid support system was developed, persons adding bait to their stinger jigs were only getting about 50% of the stinger's utility and those anglers who preferred to fish straight bucktail simply had nothing to hold that extra hook up where it needed to be and were met with frustration. Things are different now.

Both the Flathead Stinger Bucktail and the Plastic Stinger jigs are hand crafted…..they are hand poured, the components are hand cut, bent, trimmed, painted and assembled. Both have 3 layer hand painted eyes. To say the least, they are labor intensive and that fact is reflected in the cost and quantity limits. Both styles have been extensively researched and fished with outstanding success. While developed for Mississippi River angling, they also see lots of water time on Lake Erie, the Illinois River and the Missouri River compounds in the Dakotas…even Lake Superior! Originally developed as a walleye/sauger bait, the Flathead Bucktail Stinger has been used successfully for striper fishing in deep water impoundments of the US's SE states.

The Flathead jig is no stranger to today's angler, especially those who fish large rivers, and the foundation for the 3/4 ounce Flathead Stinger is found in the quality 4/0 Eagle Claw hook. Using a stainless wire that is cast into the head, a #4 Mustad treble hook is added to the wire at a specific length that makes short hits an infrequent event. After painting the head and eyes, the bucktail dressing gets added and a state-of-the-art jig is born. This gives the average angler the confidence enough to fish the bucktail jig without the need for bait. Should the wire bend while unhooking or fighting a fish, a simple re-bend with the fingers and you're back in action.
